Hands On with the Netgear EVA8000

Jeremy Toeman of Digitally was given access to one of the brand-spanking new EVA8000 "Digital Entertainer HD" digital home media streamers, which we had the chance to take a look at back at CES. He has posted a complete review of the device along with 20 minutes of hands-on video showing off what the system can do.

Overall, the product impressed me (a lot more than I was expecting - no knock to NETGEAR, but I've just seen so many similar products that were just terrible in the past). Perfect? No, but I've yet to see a single product in the “connected home" that is. The interface was clean and simple, and the unit performed as it should.

For those not aware, the Netgear EVA8000 streams movies, videos, music, Internet radio, and photos from your home PCs and storage devices to your HDTV while automatically finding all the digital media files on your home network for super quick & fast access.

Samsung's latest Bordeaux LCD trio touts 15000:1 contrast ratio

It wasn't too long ago that we caught wind of Samsung's latest Bordeaux sets, but now the firm is one-upping itself by kicking out a new trio in the lineup with even more impressive specs. Jumping from 10000:1 to 15000:1 in the contrast ratio department, the 40-inch LN40M81BD, 46-inch LN46M81BD, and 52-inch LN52M81BD all tout the True Black Panel technology in order to bring "plasma-like blacks" to the LCD HDTV arena, and you'll also find three HDMI ports, "Full HD" resolution, and the obligatory sexy black frame to really set your living room theater off. Unfortunately, further details on the units are scarce, but we do expect all three sets to hit the Korean market soon for $3,518, $4,690, and $5,863 depending on size.[Via TrustedReviews] .

Ten Geek Details on Apple TV

Six months after it was announced, Apple TV is finally here, and of course, our testing is well underway. In order to canvas a variety of different televisions and possible usage models, iLounge's editors have assembled a robust testing environment for our two Apple TV units: four computers, five HDTVs ranging in size and resolution, one widescreen non-HDTV, and audio receivers with and without optical audio inputs. Prior to our final review, we wanted to share some of our preliminary findings for those who are interested.

1. The 40GB hard disk actually has a formatted capacity of under 33GB. Unlike 40GB iPods, which typically provide a little over 37GB of formatted capacity, Apple TV's 40GB hard disk has 32.83GB of available space for your media content. What's taking up an iPod nano worth of space? A start-up video clip is probably responsible for a tiny fraction of it, with the unit's operating system to blame for a larger portion.
