1080i vs 1080p - Similarities and Differences Between 1080i and 1080p
1080i and 1080p are both High Definition display formats for HDTVs. 1080i and 1080p signals actually contain the same information. Both 1080i and 1080p represent a 1920x1080 pixel resolution (1,920 pixels across the screen by 1,080 pixels down the screen). The difference between 1080i and 1080p is in the way the signal is sent from a source component or displayed on an HDTV screen. In 1080i each frame of video is sent or displayed in alternative fields. The fields in 1080i are composed of 540 rows of pixels or lines of pixels running from the top to the bottom of the screen, with the odd fields displayed first and the even fields displayed second. Together, both fields create a full frame, made up of all 1,080 pixel rows or lines, every 30th of a second. In 1080p, the each frame of video is sent or displayed progressively.

HDTVs using the new technology developed by Texas Instruments ranked number one in all 1080p HDTV sales for 2006 within the microdisplay category (DLP, LCD and LCoS rear-projection, for example), according to data from leading U.S. consumer and retail information company, The NPD Group. Indicators point to another strong year for DLP with January 2007 statistics reporting DLP HDTVs leading with double the sales of 1080p over the nearest competitor. In 2006, DLP HDTVs at a screen size of 50 inch and greater sold more than any other competing technology (plasma, for example) in the U.S. with 28.9 percent market share, according to NPD. More than one quarter of all 1080p HDTV sales in the month of December were DLP models (27 percent overall market share in units). Total unit sales of 1080p with all technologies increased year over year by an increase of almost seven times from December 2005 to December 2006.

Apple's new set-top device has brought a plethora of new reports on Apple TV, with some interesting new features and hacks revealed on the internet. In addition to modifying the device to run XviD files, users have upgraded the installed hard drive, while one review has posted more detailed photos of a Apple TV dissection. One Rogue Amoeba developer reports that the device works fine with standard definition televisions (480i standard definition TV) that have component input, countering most of Apple's claims that it requires a widescreen or HDTV. Movies, TV Shows, and Music are synced first with highest priority (respectively), while Podcasts and Photos are lowest priority, according to Apple. The company has also posted info on pairing and unpairing the Apple Remote with Apple TV (as well as troubleshooting a non-working Apple remote).
