Sony hands out free 46" HDTVs to the first 100 customers in London

Eager London gamers that waited in line to get their hands on a PlayStation 3 this morning got way more than they may have bargained for before camping out. Sony, obviously in a generous mood, gave the first 100 customers to purchase a £425 ($834 USD) PS3 a free 46" HDTV and a free taxi ride home.

In all, Sony gave away over £250,000 ($490,450 USD) in HDTVs to accompany the PS3 launch. The free taxi ride was most likely a nod to the fact that many customers who showed up to purchase a PS3 might not have exactly had enough room to transport a 46" HDTV back to their homes.

"I feel fantastic. I'm delighted that everyone here also gets a television," said 17-year-old Ritatsu Thomas who was the first buyer in line.

The PS3 has gotten off to a somewhat slow start in the United States and has been consistently outsold by both the Wii and Xbox 360 since its November launch.

Review: Vizio's 42-Inch Plasma TV Has Lots of Bang for Buck

Plasma televisions continue to offer the best value among the larger flat-panel displays, and the Vizio VP42 HDTV is an attractively priced 42-inch plasma TV that delivers a well-contrasted picture and, for the most part, accurate color representation.

Other than a couple of quibbles about its handling of standard-definition video and about some undocumented advanced picture controls, the VP42 turned in a solid widescreen viewing experience without sacrificing important video-connection options or ease of use.

The VP42 HDTV weighs nearly 90 pounds, and Vizio wisely recommends that at least two people tackle the task of unpacking and hefting it onto its new perch. Including its factory-attached base stand, the VP42 measures a full 44.3 by 29.8 by 11.4 inches.

Sanyo's 42LM4WPR-E HDTV gets wet

Sanyo's waterproof TV managed to slip under our CeBIT radar last week, but not for long. It appears they were showing off the sexily-named 42LM4WPR-E (oh yeah, speak nerdy to us), a 42-inch HDTV that stands out among a sea of HDTVs (pun intended) by being one of the few waterproof models on the market. Granted, there are very few particular applications which would require the average Engadget reader to require a watertight HDTV, but we have been meaning to install something like this in our working rain-forest simulator at the Engadget compound, and now's as good a time as any to buy. .
